PILOT PROJECT ON NEW GENERATION OF WIRELESS@NIE

Computer Services Centre (CSC) is evaluating a new generation of campus wide wireless network for NIE. The pilot project is carried out at these locations:

  • Block 1 - Administration Building
  • Block 4 - LIBRIS & Canteen
  • CRPP & DED offices

The purpose of this pilot project is to assess the latest wireless technology for its suitability in our campus environment and, most importantly, its ability to meet the needs of NIE. The pilot project is conducted over a period of six months starting from August 2008 before CSC starts to roll out new wireless technology campus wide.

During this period, users will get to enjoy the following benefits at the pilot locations:

  1. Web Authentication - Users are provided with an additional method of getting wireless access conveniently. It is particularly useful for mobile devices without 802.1x support. Users will now have two choices of getting wireless access at the pilot sites:
    • NIEWAVE offers better security and higher quality of service; and
    • NIEWL offers convenience and easy accessibility.
Please refer to the Step-by-Step Guide for setup.
  2. Quad-mode wireless environment - NIE offers an additional wireless standard for latest mobile computers, known as IEEE 802.11n (draft 2.0). This new standard is capable of providing a bandwidth that is multiple folds of older standards, namely 802.11a and 11g. With bigger bandwidth, wireless users can afford to run multiple online applications comfortably.

For other parts of the campus, NIEWAVE is offered as the only method of getting wireless access. Wireless users are NOT required to re-configure their NIEWAVE settings because the same settings is also applied at the pilot locations.

Last but not least, CSC will be conducting a survey on user experience for this wireless pilot project in September 2008 and we look forward for your valuable feedback.

END OF SUPPORT FOR ODYSSEY ACCESS CLIENT IN NIE

Since year 2006, Wireless@NIE offered two secure methods for our Staff and Students to login wirelessly. The two methods are:

  1. client-based 802.1x using EAP-TTLS; and
  2. client-less 802.1x using EAP-PEAP.

From 31 October 2008 onwards, NIE will phase out method (1) client-based 802.1x (EAP-TTLS) for the following reasons:

  1. To reduce overhead in software administration; and
  2. To reduce cost since method (2) is freely available as it is a default feature in most popular operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Macintosh OS X and Redhat Linux.

From 1 August 2008 onwards, CSC will remove the web link for this software (Odyssey Access Client) from NIE Wireless Support Website (http://wireless.nie.edu.sg). This exercise will only impact wireless users who have their wireless configuration done before August 2006.

You may contact our friendly Service Desk for further queries or visit http://wireless.nie.edu.sg/ for more information.

ENHANCING WIRELESS@NIE

Since the launch of Wireless@NIE, ACIS is committed to enhance the wireless access for users. Measures to improve the wireless experience have been regularly updated via web, newsletters and the ACIS Service Desk. As year 2008 is drawing near, we hope to realign and consolidate some of the wireless services so that NIE ICT resources are better utilized.

ACIS will introduce some changes from year 2008 onwards, and they are:

  1. SIMPLIFY YOUR WIRELESS CONFIGURATION BY USING ONLY NIEWAVE

    What is that?
When NIE first rolled out Wireless@NIE, each user had 2 wireless networks configured in their computer: NIEwirefreeA and NIEwirefreeB, with each representing different wireless capability (IEEE 802.11a and 802.11bg). As technology advances, ACIS has introduced a new wireless network named NIEWAVE in 2006 that could accommodate both wireless capabilities.

What will happen from year 2008?
ACIS will discontinue these two obsolete wireless networks: NIEwirefreeA and NIEwirefreeB. All wireless users should only be using NIEWAVE.

    Who are affected?
You will be affected if you have left your wireless configuration stagnant since July 2003 to end July 2006. All wireless users who have their configuration done from August 2006 onwards are already using this new wireless network.

What can we do if we are the affected ones?
You may consult our staff at ACIS Service Desk or download the Step-by-step guide from here.

  2. MAKING YOUR WIRELESS ACCESS MORE CONVENIENT BY DISCONTINUING THE USE OF DIGITAL CERTIFICATE

    What is that?
Users of Wireless@NIE used to have an additional digital certificate installed in their Odyssey Client as part of security measure for safer wireless access. However, this measure proved too much of a hassle for educational users.

What will happen from year 2008?
In order to balance convenience and security of NIE wireless services, ACIS has decided to discontinue the use of digital certificate from year 2008 onwards.

    Who are affected?
You are affected only if you are using Odyssey Client and your last configuration is done before August 2006. If you are not sure, you can run your Odyssey Client and go to Profile -> Authentication tab and look at ‘Validate server certificate’. If the option is checked, you are still using this digital certificate.

What can we do if we are the affected ones?
UNCHECK the option ‘Validate server certificate’.

  3. CONSOLIDATING NIE ICT RESOURCES BY DISCONTINUING TWO WIRELESS APPLICATIONS FOR STUDENT TEACHERS

    What is that?
NIE has two wireless applications to facilitate communication among the Student Teachers. These applications are NIE Messenger (instant messaging software) and LBS (Location Based Service software).

What will happen from year 2008?
ACIS will discontinue these wireless applications as the usage is too low to justify for the resources needed to sustain them. Fortunately, NIE users now have a wide variety of free instant message software such as MSN and Yahoo Messenger to maintain good communication channels with fellow student teachers.

  4. LAST ISSUE OF UNWIRED NEWSLETTER

    What is that?
UNWIRED newsletters have always been one of the channels for both NIE Staff and Student Teachers to be updated on latest wireless technology, gadgets and security issues. Anyone is free to download the newsletter from NIE wireless website.

What will happen from year 2008?
ACIS is releasing the last issue of UNWIRED newsletter (issue #10) on NIE wireless website in early January 2008. Watch out for exciting articles on latest development and gadgets in this final issue!

Over the years, wireless technology has matured rapidly and various new techniques and methods are readily available within reasonable cost. Therefore, with this technology tide turning in favour of our campus environment, ACIS will strive to improve NIE wireless infrastructure to offer better coverage and roaming experience for all NIE Staff, Student Teachers and visitors.

!!! IMPORTANT !!!

DISCONTINUATION OF LOAN SERVICE FOR WIRELESS COMBOCARDS

With effect from 1 January 2007, ACIS no longer provides any loan service for the following:

  1. ORiNOCO 11a/b/g ComboCards
  2. ORiNOCO 11a/b ComboCards

The discontinuation of this loan service is necessary as its demand has diminished significantly due to the following reasons:

  1. All modern mobile computers have built-in wireless adapter; and
  2. Wireless cards are very affordable (costs less than $50 each).

Therefore, considering the resources necessary to sustain this loan service, ACIS has regrettably decided to discontinue it from 1 January 2007. ACIS Services Hub will continue to provide the mentioned service and online loan renewal (through Staff and NIE portals) till 31 Dec 2006, after which all requests for loan or loan extension will not be processed.

INFORMATION REFRESH!

As announced on 1 August 2006, Wireless@NIE supports 2 flavours of IEEE 802.1X standard: TTLS and PEAP. In simple layman terms, Wireless@NIE supports both client-based and client-less security methods.

Client-based Method (TTLS)
TTLS is a client-based method for you to get into Wireless@NIE. It requires the installation of Odyssey Client into your mobile computer or PDA.

Client-less Method (PEAP)
PEAP is a client-less method as the configuration can be done directly inside the Operating Systems such as Microsoft Windows XP and Macintosh OS X.

We recommend client-less method to all wireless users in this campus.

PEAP is now supported by Wireless@NIE!

At present, NIE is using IEEE 802.1X security framework to secure your wireless connection. Initially under this 802.1X framework, only EAP-TTLS is supported and it requires a client software, Odyssey Client, to be resident in your computer. However, with the launch of EAP-PEAP, you no longer need to install this client software and you can configure your Windows XP (SP1 and above) or Macintosh operating system (version 10.3 and above) to connect NIE campus wireless network effortlessly.

You may find the PEAP configuration guide at:
Getting Started > Step-by-Step Guide.

11g For NIE!

Wireless @ NIE now supports the latest wireless standards IEEE 802.11g! The upgrading project, undertaken by CSC, was started in December 2003 and it was announced in our Wireless @ NIE newsletter (Jan 2004 issue). After months of implementation and vigorous tests, the project was completed and commissioned on 30 Mar 2004. NIE is the first Institute of Higher Learning to implement 11g wireless access points campus-wide.

With 11g being supported, wireless users can hook on at a max speed of 54Mbps (mega-bits per second) while still using the same radio frequency as 11b standard. The matured 11b standard (using 2.4Ghz frequency band) has good wireless coverage and range but its connection speed is low (11Mbps). The newer 11a (using 5Ghz frequency band) has big bandwidth and high connection speed of 54Mbps. However, its coverage area is smaller compared to 11b radio signal. The main advantage of 11g standard is that it has the best of both world - good coverage and high bandwidth. 11g standard is gaining popularity as newer portable computers now support both 11b and 11g. Therefore, it is definitely the right move for us to have it here in NIE. Now, we are glad to declare that NIE campus-wide wireless network (a.k.a Wireless@NIE) supports all 3 popular standards (IEEE 802.11a/b/g).

Following this announcement, we wish to inform you that we have the latest ORiNOCO 11a/b/g ComboCards available for loan from 7 June 2004 onwards. Please proceed to the ACIS Services Hub at Block 4 level 4 for the loan of ORiNOCO 11a/b/g ComboCard.

Rogue Access Points

Under NIE IT Security Policy, Staff and Trainees Teachers are NOT allowed to setup their own wireless network in NIE compound by connecting their own wireless access points (AP) to the campus network ports. By setting up these rogue AP for your own convenience, you have inevitably compromised all security measures which NIE has painstakingly implemented to protect the Institute's network infrastructure, resources and reputation. Since wireless signal cannot be constrained predictably within any physical structure, it is a tedious process to locate and identify intruders once they have compromised our defences through these rogue AP. Any installation of network devices (such as network switch, hub, wireless access point) has to be audited and approved by ACIS. Computer Services Centre conducts routine security audit on our wireless space and wired network so as to maintain the integrity of our resources and to prevent any disruption caused by unwelcomed intruders.

If you have wireless AP connecting to our campus network, please turn it off immediately.

Digital Certificate

From 21 April 2004 onwards, Wireless @ NIE is using the new digital certificate as part of its authentication mechanism. As the ACIS Services Hub is still receiving requests for the new digital certificate, we would like to inform you that it is still available. As this component is part of our wireless security mechanism, please use your NIE email account to contact our helpdesk personnel (wireless@nie.edu.sg) for the details. Please note that this exercise only affects existing wireless users who have not update their digital certificate since we announced it via email (dated 12 April 2004, subject: New Digital Certificate for Wireless@NIE).

Take note that this exercise does not affect the following group of users:

  1. Users with computer that connects to the campus network port via a physical cable; and
  2. New wireless users who install the Odyssey Client at the ACIS Services Hub after 12 April 2004.
